Human rights concerns have forced the men’s cricket team of Australia to postpone their three-match T20 International series against Afghanistan, which was originally set for August, Cricket Australia (CA) said on Monday. After consulting with the Australian government, CA had previously decided to postpone the ODI series against Afghanistan, which was originally scheduled for March 2023, due to a noticeable decline in women’s and girls’ human rights in the country. The statement from CA said that it would “continue to engage with the Afghanistan Cricket Board in anticipation of improved conditions for women and girls in the country.”

CA has kept up its consultations with the Australian Government regarding the situation in Afghanistan over the last 12 months. The advice from the government is that things are becoming worse in Afghanistan for women and girls. We have therefore stuck to our original stance and decided to put off the bilateral series against Afghanistan,” the statement continued.
