The rise of Rohit Sharma to the captaincy, which came at the expense of Indian cricket great Virat Kohli, proved to be a contentious affair. While Kohli left the top position in T20 cricket after the 2021 T20 World Cup voluntarily, his dismissal as ODI captain in December 2021 went against his wishes.

Given that he had made it apparent that he intended to continue serving as the ODI and Test captain, Kohli was obviously upset by the decision. As a result, there was a verbal altercation between Sourav Ganguly, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), who declared that they desired a leader for white-ball cricket, and Kohli, who was requested to continue as captain for the shortest format as well. The batting icon turned down any such application.

Later, in January 2022, following a series against South Africa, Kohli resigned as India’s test captain, making Rohit the team’s all-around captain.
