T20 World Cup, SA versus AFG semis: South Africa rips apart Afghanistan fairytale to reach maiden final.

South Africa advanced to their first ICC World Cup final, defeating Afghanistan by nine wickets on Thursday, June 27, in Trinidad. The Proteas bowlers wreaked havoc, limiting Afghanistan to just 56 runs.

Afghanistan’s fairytale run in the T20 World Cup 2024 has come to an end, as South African bowlers went through their batting line to send the Proteas to their maiden ICC final on Thursday, June 27, with a 9-wicket victory. Afghanistan were bowled out for 56 runs in 12 overs by Marco Jansen, Tabraiz Shamsi, Kagiso Rabada, and Anrich Nortje on a Trinidad surface that was a batter’s nightmare.

The target was promptly followed down by the Proteas hitters, who finally halted their terrible record in ICC knockouts and advanced to the final in Barbados on Saturday, June 29. The tone of the game was clearly set in the first over, as Rashid Khan chose to bat first in Trinidad after winning the toss. Jansen got the ball and removed Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck in his first over. The second over from Keshav Maharaj appeared to be the only one in which Afghanistan received some reprieve, as the demolition job resumed from the third.
